Honduras. Part 1

Hey friends. The funniest thing just happened…

After a weekend of Whitewater rafting in Georgia and Tennessee, and an amazing Mission Staff Retreat at 3 Crosses in Cannon Falls, MN I packed up and headed to Chicago to see my girlfriend Erica. For those of you new to the blog or for those who have been living under a rock, Erica, my girlfriend has been serving with the Missioners of Christ in Honduras for the past year. Wednesday was the first I had seen her since January.

So I flew into Chicago and was met by a very beautiful “gringa” at Baggage Claim. We went to Cheeseburger in Paradise to met with our friend Anne. Then back to Erica’s house for a well deserved long night’s rest.

Thursday we bummed around, ran some errands, had lunch and watched The Office. A LOT of The Office. Friday was to be a big day. The reason Erica was home was for her friend Marty’s wedding. So around one o’clock on Friday we packed up and headed down south of Chicago for the wedding. The outdoor wedding. Did I mention it had been thunder-storming all day and the night before?

We checked into our hotel and met our friends for a little pre-wedding Culvers, (It’s apparently some good luck tradition in the North Suburbs.) Then back to the hotel to get ready. Here’s where things get interesting.

Erica and I had planned to fly into Tegucigalpa the next day and then on to Comayagua to spend the week in Honduras. Well I said to myself, “Self. You haven’t checked the Drudge Report in a long time. You should do that while the girls put on their make-up in the bathroom. So I did. And what was the splash headline?

“Plane Crashes in Tegucigalpa. 3 Dead”

Crap.

So about 10 minutes later, American Airlines called Erica to tell her that the airport would be closed and she would not be able to fly in the next morning. I got on the phone with Continental and found out the same thing. To make a long story slightly less long, we were able to rebook our flights to arrive into San Pedro Sula, another airport 3 hours from Comayagua. So off to the wedding we go.

The weather held out. The ceremony was outside in the open under some very cloudy skies, but not a drop was felt. The hors d’oeuvres were served and there were just a few sprinkles. We moved inside a tent for dinner… and Noah scurried to finish the Ark. Long story long, the tent flooded. There was water under our chairs about a half inch deep for a good 20 minutes. But luckily we were having enough fun to not really notice or care.

After a long night of celebrating, we headed back to the hotel, which I should be referring to as “place where we changed our clothes” because there was no sleep there. We headed for O’Hare at 2:30AM to catch our flights later that morning. Because we booked tickets separate from each other, we were on two different airlines. The good news is, I didn’t feel so bad when I got bumped to first class for both my flights. The only perk I used were the extra big chairs as I slept through both flights, finally landing in Honduras 2 hours before Erica.

That part of the journey, tomorrow.

I too saw ABC and Drudge reports on the plane crash and I knew you were headed that way around that tijme from peeking at your “Where I’ll Be”. I said a prayer for you and Erica.
The next day I saw your folks at Mass and from there I knew you
    both were safe.
Chicago’s one of my favorite places.
    Are the shoes dry yet?
