Honduras. Part 2

Honduras. Part 2
Category: Travel and Places

As I stepped off the plane I thought to myself, I wonder what I’ll eat for lunch. I’m in Honduras, I might as well ring it in with a great Honduran meal to start the week. I’ll eat whatever I see first. I walked through the door to the terminal and there it was… Wendy’s.

I waited for Erica and after praying and listening to music and seeing some very interesting goodbye’s, I saw one very blond sight for sore-eyes. She was one of the last ones off her plane so I started to panic a little after an hour of waiting.

We ordered our Wendy’s, took a taxi to the bus terminal where we boarded a bus bound for Comayagua. This was far from the First Class travel I had grown used to in the previous few hours.

We boarded the bus, which was a glorified school bus, with many broken seats. We found two that were slightly less leaned back than the rest and the watched as every other seat became occupied. Then a few people stood in the aisle… then a few more… then, well let’s just say were nearly doubled the recommended occupancy. But it was ok, this is Honduras. It’s apparently what they do.

About an hour into the trip we were in the process of climbing a mountainous road in… the mountains. We were making a curve when a car decided to pass us on the left, while another bus was approaching, thus forcing us to make a little room. However, the little room we inched to the right was also occupied by the side of the mountain. The busses, front tire jumped the curb and we stopped pretty quick. Hey, it’s Honduras, it’s how they do things. Apparently not. Erica, my translator told me that many of the Hondurans on the bus began redefining the nature of their relationship with the Church of Rome… in between swearing.

Luckily we were back on the road in no time and our driver soon got over his fear of death as we were zigzagging through the mountains in no time. We passed many small villages along the way and I began to realize a few things about this country. First, people really like hanging out outside. Next, bicycles are everywhere. Lastly, many advertisements are just painted on the side of the mountains. I don’t know who this “Jesus” is, but apparently he’s running for presidente. He’s got a good name, I think He’ll go far.

We arrived in Comayagua and at our bus stop… also known as a Texaco station, we were met by some of the Hondurans from the Missioners who picked us up in a very stylish Toyota truck. Off we went to the Missioners of Christ. To which we arrived safe and sound after nearly 13 hours of travel and very little sleep.

After dinner I headed to the apartment where the men stay. So here I am at Casa de Guadalupe in Comayagua, Honduras. It is 10:38 PM and I’ve had 2 VERY long days.

More about my first day next
