Why -7 is no fun

Ladies and Gentlemen, the thaw has begun.

St Paul, MN has finally broken out of below freezing. When I got the inspiration to write this blog, we had yet to break out of below zero. Let me share some thoughts.

Ice. Everywhere. You slip, you slide. Cars plow into other cars, people who were walking upright, are now on their backs like helpless turtles. It hurts to go outside, it hurts to walk, it hurts to breathe. If you stay outside for more than 15 minutes, you have the potential to die.

My brothers, this should not be so.

This January, right before I left for the Rockboat, I had the chance to experience high’s below zero… for a week straight. That’s right, for a week, the high was -2 or below. I’ve never claimed to be the smartest man, but even I can say for sure, there is something just not right about that.

Being from Florida, I’m pretty confident that weather has never “hurt”. Sure there are sunburns, but even you forget about those after the initial sting. There is no way to forget you are breathing ice.

But there is a bright side. Living in Minnesota, I appreciate “the first day of spring” a lot more. The first day you can walk outside without a winter coat, it’s like you’ve died and gone to heaven. Which I think illustrates my point exactly. Being warm= heaven then therefore and thusly, being cold= hell. If being cold= hell and Minnesota is cold, then Minnesota is hell. If being warm= heaven, and Florida is warm year round…

If I need to explain this concept any further, then you are probably from Minnesota, and you won’t change your mind.

But this past week friends, a beautiful sight fell on my eyes. Green poked out from under the pale death of snow. I could walk outside without looking like Nanook of the North. No more hats, no more gloves, no more long underwear.

The sun isn’t broken anymore!
